Another guiding principle is that your off-line internet marketing activities should make it easy for your prospect to go straight to your web site. One of the best ways to market your website off-line is direct mail postcards.

This is not the only medium that has problems like this. Newspapers are bulky, radio has to spell it out and like before most people are driving at the time. Now if someone is in the office reading a trade journal and comes across an article about you in the magazine, it's not difficult for him to copy your URL into his browser and pay your site a visit. I don’t mean to say that those other avenues won’t drive traffic to your site, but it will take numerous impressions and repetition to get them to remember your address.

On the other hand, direct mail postcards are generally received at the home or office where a computer is present, and if received somewhere else they are small enough to keep with you until you can get to a computer. This way, your prospective customer will be able to take the take right over to their desk top computer, type in your address and go right to your site. Brilliant!

(1) They have not taken the time to develop a marketing plan.

A plan focuses your efforts and allows you to make the most of your marketing budget. Unfortunately, you can market without a plan. Yes, you read that right. You can do it, and people do market without marketing plans everyday. But that does not mean you should. To make the most of your marketing efforts and budget, make sure you take the time each year to create a plan.

(2) They don’t have written goals.

Smart business owners have written goals and objectives for what they want to achieve with their business and for each of their marketing activities. I know this sounds b-o-r-i-n-g, but it's a fact. There is proof that people who put their goals into writing have a higher success rate than those who do not. Plus, how can you develop a plan if you don't have concrete objectives? You need a clear vision and target to aim for. You can't possibly determine what marketing or how much marketing you need if you don't know what you are aiming for.

(3) They have a short-term attitude.

They are reactive in nature, and while on the surface it appears they are doing a lot of marketing, they are not doing anything consistently or long enough to make an impact. Running an ad or sending out your newsletter a few times and giving up when you don't get immediate results is worse than doing nothing at all. How so? Because at least when you do nothing it doesn't cost you any money. Pulling the plug too soon costs you money. And statistics show it takes somewhere between three and 10 exposures to a message for the average consumer to notice it and take action. So it is quite possible your audience was just beginning to take notice right about the time you threw in the towel!

(4) They don't know their USP.

Probably the worst way business owners sabotage their marketing efforts without even realizing it, is to NOT have a clear Unique Selling Proposition (USP). The greatest marketing plan in the world will not be effective if you have not clearly defined why someone should buy your product or service instead of all the other products or services available to them. If you have not figured out what is unique and better about your product or service, and found a compelling way to communicate this in everything you do, you can market 'til the cows come home and you will be wasting your time and your money

10 Tips to Banish Marketing Sabotage

(1) Develop a marketing plan. Make sure you make it your number one priority to develop a marketing plan every year.

(2) Write objectives. Write at least one objective that states what results you would like to achieve with your business over the next year. And, write at least one objective for every marketing activity you undertake, that states what results you would like to achieve from that activity over the next year.

(3) Stay the course. Check in on your progress toward your objectives every three to six months, but give your plan a good nine to 12 months to work.

(4) Determine your unique selling proposition and make sure it is represented clearly and in a compelling way in everything you do.

(5) Don't try to be "everything to everyone. " Focus on a few specific benefits and a specific audience.

(6) Track all of your marketing activities so you know exactly what is working and what is not working.

(7) Don't rely on one marketing activity. Employ a mix of several marketing activities to reach more people more times.

(8) Create a system to help you stay on track with your marketing activities every month and to help you plan ahead for future activities.

(9) Create a realistic budget based on a percentage of your projected revenue, or the dollars you have available for marketing and stick to it. Marketing is an investment in your business. You have to spend enough to make progress but not more than your business can financially support.

(10) Understand your environment. The economy, competition, the strength of your particular industry, your prospects' situation. You have to understand them all so you can create an effective plan to either overcome obstacles or take advantage of opportunities. Follow these guidelines and your business stands a much greater chance of succeeding. All of these activities are part of a good marketing plan. If you want to drive traffic to your site it is imperative that you get onto the first three pages of Google and the other top search engines.

Here are few ways through which you can get your site appear on the first page of Google search results.

In order to optimize your website to appear in natural search results, there are four components that you will need to address.

1. Design

Many small businesses make the mistake of designing their website and then start thinking about driving traffic to it. The problem is that the way you design your site can result in your site being ignored by the search engine spiders, which means you will receive very little traffic. When designing your site, ensure you avoid the following pitfalls.

Flash: Sites are designed in HTML or flash codes. The spiders that are sent to your site by the search engines cannot read flash.

Frames: Some agencies design sites within frames. It makes designing the site easier as the only thing that changes from page to page is the content within the frame. However, spiders cannot read what is inside a frame so you will not get indexed and noticed by search engines.

Keywords: Choosing the keywords that you want to appear in search results for is one of the most important things you can do. Invest time in choosing the keywords. Think about how you would search for your product or service. Once you have decided on your keywords, you need to place them throughout your site. The main areas are:

Web page title: This is what you see written in the title bar of the browser. This should explain what the purpose of your site or your page is and include keywords, but always in such a way that makes sense to a user who reads it.

Meta tags: The tags are not visible to users but they explain what the content of the page is. Keywords should be placed in here as they are easily searchable by spiders.

Homepage content: Your homepage is searched by the spiders and you should ensure that your keywords appear near the top header. They should also be sprinkled throughout the homepage.

Keyword density: Each page should have a minimum of 250 words; your keywords should account for 2 - 8% of the word on the page. That means they should appear between 4 and 16 times. To help you achieve both objectives you should focus on a couple of keywords for each page rather than a large number.

3. Links:

Inbound links: your site might be designed in a way that is easily searchable by spiders and your content might be sprinkled with keywords, but you need to have other sites linking to you in order to achieve success. Ensure you know how many other websites are linking into your site and set a goal for increasing that figure. Get A Mentor - How important is it to have a mentor in business? It's critical! It's not just a nice to have it's a MUST HAVE. There's a reason why all the most successful business people have mentors. It's because you need people who've been where you have been to help guide you through the twists and turns of success.

Before I found my currant mentors, I'd spent a fortune failing and far too much time (years I'll never get back) trying to implement methods that just didn't work and never would. I was like a wind up toy that kept trying and trying to walk though the same brick wall over and over again.

But in only 18 months from the time I decided to shut up, listen and learn from people who had done what I wanted to do many times over, I went from being an MLM failure to making over $100K working part time all the while still holding down a full time teaching job; and I owe it all not only to getting the proper mentoring and guidance from the right mentors, but also to the fact that I was willing to listen to them and put their knowledge into massive action every day.

Lead With The Product - Using the income from your regular job can be a bit of a sticky wicket at first so you'll need to budget for it. This is why getting your MLM to fund your MLM as quickly as possible is so important. But how you ask? Well... (Drum roll please) by selling your product of course...but not the way you've been taught by your upline and Network Marketing Company.

You wont be buying any more brochures, DVDs, CDs or flyers...in fact the only thing you will be paying for when you first get started are leads, but not those expensive opportunity leads that your company is pushing on you...those are worthless. You also won't be calling your friends and family to harass into joining your new business opportunity nor will you be employing the three foot belly to belly rule; your acquaintances are off limits from now on!

You see those methods only work in the company's favor. In fact only 3% of all MLM reps ever make it anywhere near the big league; a stat that neither the companies nor their reps readily divulge. I built a 6 figure income in Network Marketing in an 18 month period, all while I was still working a full time job as a first grade teacher. Let me back up a little.

I've lived in the majestic suburbs of New York most of my life but have for the past few years gotten really tired not only of my teaching career with its grueling hours that never seemed to quit even when I was on vacation or just trying to relax on the weekends with family or friends (I always had papers to grade or a new curriculum to prepare) but also the freezing cold winters were really starting to get me down.

My husband said to me three years ago while I was once again complaining about my plight, and I believe it was tongue in check, that if I replaced the income from my teaching job with a six figure income in network marketing, I could retire from teaching and we could move to a warmer climate during the winter months.

You'll find yourself doing things you never dreamed possible, but you must be willing to take the lumps of failures along with the glory of successes and accept them as part of the deal. You will not succeed in network marketing until you are willing to fail not just once or twice but over and over again. And this leads us to number three:

Like many people struggling to make a better life for themselves, and their families, you stumbled across the Internet as a possible way to do this. Please allow me to inject just a little brutal reality for you here...

First of all, those people with list of 50,000... 100,000... even 250,000 subscribers get bombarded with request to promote all types of products every day. I personally receive more software, ebooks, huge DVD courses, and accesses to membership sites, than I can ever look at. The FedEx guy drops off unexpected, and unrequested, packages to my house several times per week. My home office has about $20,000 worth of products stacked up in a corner that I don't anticipate ever working my way completely through… since new stuff arrives regularly.

Knowing that first fact, it's actually probably easier to focus on those with somewhat smaller list when seeking joint venture partners. Honestly, many of those with smaller list also have much more responsive lists. The smaller lists are sometime more responsive because they haven't been desensitized by being constantly bombarded with "special offers."

List owners who get flooded with JV offers need a system of screening which offers they will take a serious look at in their very limited spare time. Often that filter is friends. If one of their friends recommends that they promote a product, they're more likely to take a serious look at. Their friends pre-screen offers.

A second type of filter is certain "high powered" individuals that have managed to gain a reputation for only presenting the big dogs with world-class joint venture offers. These individuals often work as "JV brokers." Since they make the job of large list owners, and the job of those seeking to introduce products to the marketplace, easier, they serve a very useful function. In exchange for brokering deals, and getting products noticed that might otherwise die on the vine, they get paid a percentage commission for putting the joint ventures together.

Bisnis internet sama sekali tak ada kaitannya dengan bakat, apalagi keturunan. Saat kecil, saya yakin tak ada orangtua para pebisnis internet sukses mengatakan kalau anaknya nanti bakal jadi pebisnis internet jempolan. Orangtua saya pun dulu hanya berharap seperti para orangtua lainnya. Asal saya hidup tidak luntang-lantung saja sudah untung. Syukur-syukur bisa mendapat pekerjaan dengan gaji bulanan. Supaya paling tidak bisa mencukupi kebutuhan dasar hidup.

Karenanya, perlu disadari bahwa dalam membangun Bisnis Internet adalah waktu belajar (learning curve) yang mau tidak mau harus dilalui. Dalam kurun itulah berbagai upaya semestinya bisa dilakukan secara optimal.

3. Lebih Rasional dan Realistik dengan Harapan Anda.

Hal penting lainnya adalah realistik dalam menentukan tujuan-tujuan yang akan dicapai dalam meraih hasil (keberhasilan dan uang). Boleh jadi, jika kurang diperhatikan, Anda akan merasa sangat kecewa dan secara moral menurun (kurang semangat, lesu) ketika Anda tak berhasil meraih harapan-harapan yang ditetapkan terlalu tinggi. Padahal, sebagaimana bisnis-bisnis lainnya, Bisnis Internet juga membutuhkan Anda ”memberi makan”, ”memberi perhatian” dan ”membuatnya ruang gerak menuju kematangan”.

Artinya, betapapun bisnis ini Bisnis Internet, ia tak dapat begitu saja berhasil secara instan. Amazon.com yang kini telah menjadi toko raksasa yang melampaui toko buku konvensional dalam skala dunia sekalipun, pada awalnya sempat merugi dan”berdarah-darah”, sebelumnya akhirnya berhasil seperti sekarang ini. Artinya ada rentang waktu yang dibutuhkan untuk membuatnya berhasil dan berkembang.

Artinya, meskipun ada sejumlah kemudahan karena mengambil manfaat dan pengalaman panjang yang dialami orang lain, tetap saja ada rentang waktu yang dibutuhkan untuk menjalankannya sampai menuju suatu keberhasilan. Hal itu jelas membutuhkan komitmen, kesungguh-sungguhan dan kesabaran untuk menjalankannya dan mengambil pengalaman dan belajar lebih cepat untuk menguasainya. Karenanya, ada satu keyakinan "Kalau orang lain bisa, mengapa kita tidak?".

Kalau Orang Lain Bisa, Mengapa Kita Tidak (Bagian 1)

Mungkin ungkapan ini terkesan terlalu menyederhanakan masalah yang sesungguhnya. Orang Inggris bilang, simplicity. Namun, kalau kita melihat begitu banyak orang yang meraih sukses di Binsis Internet, salah satunya, padahal awalnya mereka juga tidak mengerti dan berpengalaman di bidang tersebut, ungkapan di atas mungkin ada benarnya. Bahkan ada pepatah yang mengatakan, “Alah bisa, Karena biasa”.

Joko Susilo, yang berhasil membangun bisnis Internetnya, yang pada tahun pertama tak memberikan hasil dan malah membuatnya stress, terbukti bukanlah ahli TI dan Internet. Ia seorang sarjana arsitektur, yang dalam perjalanan awalnya merasa sangat gembira dan tumbuh keyakinannya ketika bisnis Internet “menjual informasi” yang dirintisnya menghasilkan uang 25-50 ribu rupiah per hari. Jumlahnya memang masih relatif kecil, namun hal itu telah mampu membangun kepercayaannya bahwa apa yang dilakukannya sudah benar dan mampu memberikan hasil.

Ketika portal “detik.com” pertama kali diluncurkan 10 tahun yang lalu, para pengelolanya bukanlah orang-orang yang ahli di bidang TI atau Internet. Malah, mereka mengaku tak mengenal dan mengerti Internet, namun keberanian dan kegigihanlah yang membuat mereka bisa mengembangkannya. Lingkungan saat itu, juga sangat awam dengan Internet, website dan hal-hal yang seputar dengan itu.

Namun, kalau kita melihat kenyataan sekarang ini, detik.com merupakan portal berita utama Indonesia yang mampu meraih penghasilan sangat besar dan didukung oleh ratusan orang. Bukan itu saja, detik.com telah mampu membangun suatu usaha baru ”situs berita” dengan perkembangan yang sangat cepat, terutama kalau dibandingkan dengan usaha-usaha konvensional di bidang media, utamanya media cetak. Itu hanya dapat terjadi berkat dukungan Internet dan TI.

Apa yang sesungguhnya dapat kita petik dari pengalaman itu adalah, bahwa keberhasilan dalam membangun bisnis, terutama bisnis Internet tidaklah semata-mata karena seseorang itu ahli dalam bidang TI atau pun Internet dan eCommerce, misalnya. Banyak bukti yang menunjukkan keberhasilan itu justru diraih oleh mereka-mereka yang bukan ahli, tanpa pengalaman yang sangat banyak, tetapi kerja keras merekalah yang tampaknya menjadi titik balik keberhasilan yang diraihnya.

Justru pengalaman mereka diperoleh sejalan dengan perkembangan usaha mereka, pengetahuan mereka meningkat bersamaan dengan semakin banyak masalah dan peluang yang mereka hadapi. Yang menarik, rentang waktu, berbagai kesulitan dan kegagalan yang dihadapi, serta komitmen dan kesungguh-sungguhan merekalah yang menghantarkan mereka pada keberhasilan. Tidak ada yang instan, tidak ada yang magic.

Hanya saja, dengan kehadiran Teknologi Informasi dan Internet sekarang ini, ada hal menarik yang terjadi. Yakni semakin terbukanya peluang orang per orang untuk membangun kerajaan bisnisnya, dari yang kecil, yang hampir-hampir tanpa investasi besar, hingga yang menengah dan besar. Bahkan ada yang sekarang ini besar, tetapi awalnya dibangun dengan investasi finansial yang tidak terlalu besar, terutama jika dibandingkan dengan membangun usaha-usaha konvensional.

Itulah keajaiban Internet dalam dunia bisnis. Banyak hal baru yang dapat dikembangkan yang kemudian berhasil menjadi bisnis yang besar dan meraksasa, yang pada awalnya bermula dari ide-ide besar yang tanpa Internet hal itu mustahil bisa dilakukan sebagaimana sekarang ini. Kelahiran Yahoo, You Tube, Facebook, dan masih banyak lagi berawal dari hal-hal yang sesungguhnya sederhana dan tak dibekali dengan investasi finansial yang besar.

Kini usaha-usaha itu telah berubah menjadi raksasa yang bahkan melampaui pencapaian usaha konvesnional yang telah dijalankan berpuluh-puluh tahun. Dalam perkembangan itu, pastilah ada ”Rahasia” di baliknya, yang tersimpan rapi menjadi milik yang sangat indvidual para pembangunnya. Kebanyakan Milioner Internet, meskipun mereka mengatakan telah membuka rahasia keberhasilannya, namun sesungguhnya mereka tak mengatakan rahasia yang sebenarnya, yang membuat mereka kini kaya raya. Karena itu akan menjadi milik mereka yang unik dan abadi.

Bukan berarti keberhasilan mereka tak dapat ditiru. Kebanyakan mereka justru memformulasikan keberhasilan mereka, membangunnya dalam suatu konsep dan sistem, yang apabila diterapkan oleh orang lain yang membelinya diharapkan dapat juga menghantarkan keberhasilan sebagaimana yang mereka raih. Pengetahuan, pengalaman, semangat, komitmen dan visi untuk meraih keberhasilan yang dipengaruhi oleh lingkungan yang unik itu, yang justru membuatnya berbeda. Tak ada keberhasilan yang sama, yang dapat diraih oleh setiap orang, bahkan meskipun dalam lingkungan yang tampaknya sama.

Selain itu, keberhasilan yang diraih seseorang, beberapa tahun yang lalu, tentu akan sangat berbeda situasi dan kondisinya dengan yang sekarang, terutama karena pasti telah terjadi berbagai perubahan dan perbaikan, serta peningkatan. Apakah itu terkait dengan lingkungan bisnis, ekonomi, teknologi, maupun optimisme seseorang. Justru perubahan-perubahan yang terjadi sekarang ini yang seharusnya disikapi secara lebih sungguh-sungguh, karena bukan tidak mungkin kondisi sekarang lebih ”menguntungkan” dibandingkan dengan beberapa tahun lalu.

Karenanya, semangat dan optimisme sebagaimana diungkap di awal tulisan ini “Kalau Orang Lain Bisa, Mengapa Kita Tidak” bukan merupakan slogan kosong. Tak ada yang mudah, tak ada yang instan. Tantangan realitas yang ada pastilah juga berperan. Hanya saja berbagai pengalaman keberhasilan yang terungkap akan menjadi ”guru pintar” yang mestinya mampu dilihat secara lebih realistik dan penting.

Tak berlebihan kalau judul postingan ini saya beri judul seperti itu. Betapa tidak, kalau hal tersebut memang telah berhasil membawa seorang warga Semarang, Joko Susilo, ke jenjang sukses. Meski untuk mencapai itu, sebagaimana diakui Joko, bukan hal yang mudah. “Saya sempat STRESS berat. Keluarga dan teman-teman saya juga sangat prihatin dengan kondisi saya yang terus berjuang untuk berhasil berbisnis (menjual informasi) di Internet, sementara hasil yang saya harapkan tak kunjung tiba,” aku Joko. Tapi, itu kondisi beberapa tahun lalu. Most web hosting companies will provide you with basic web traffic information that you then have to interpret and make pertinent use of. However, the data you receive from your host company can be overwhelming if you don't understand how to apply it to your particular business and website.

Let's start by examining the most basic data - the average visitors to your site on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

These figures are the most accurate measure of your website's activity. It would appear on the surface that the more traffic you see recorded, the better you can assume your website is doing, but this is an inaccurate perception. You must also look at the behavior of your visitors once they come to your website to accurately gauge the effectiveness of your site.

There is often a great misconception about what is commonly known as "hits" and what is really effective, quality traffic to your site.

Hits simply means the number of information requests received by the server. If you think about the fact that a hit can simply equate to the number of graphics per page, you will get an idea of how overblown the concept of hits can be. For example, if your homepage has 15 graphics on it, the server records this as 15 hits, when in reality we are talking about a single visitor checking out a single page on your site. If you have a page that you believe is important, but visitors are exiting it rapidly, that page needs attention. Assuming you already created a Squidoo account, follow below steps:

Login to your Squidoo account and click on the 'My Dashboard' link
